The first United States military operation to take place following WWII involved,  Operation HIGHJUMP commenced 26 August 1946 and ended in late February 1947. Task Force 68 included 4,700 men, 70 ships, and 33 aircraft. Military expedition was sent following the war to allegedly train for arctic warfare or chase Nazi submarines to New Schwabenland. What was intended to be a 9 month research operation was abandoned after meeting stiff resistance and discovering the edge of the world and the firmament beyond the ice wall.
